So, you're on the fence about whether or not to get an air conditioning system, and you want to know where to start.
The first general question we ask our customers is: "How much square footage is your home or place of business?". The reasoning for that is simple, 1 Ton of Air conditioning (the unit of measurement for A/C) is equivalent to 600 square feet. Therefore, if you have a 2000 sq ft home, you would need a 3.5 ton air conditioning system. However, this can vary depending on the type of home you have. For example, if you have a split-level home, we might recommend installing a two-zone system (one for the bottom floor one for the top floor) depending on the difference in square feet.
Another question is: "What brand of equipment should I choose?". If you're considering installing or replacing a furnace or air-handler then for your Good, Better, Best scenarios we recommend Ruud, Carrier, Trane (in that order). If you're considering ductless split-units, then for your Good, Better, Best scenarios we recommend Fujitsu, LG, and Daikin (in that order).
Third, the most anticipated question is: "How much?". This answer is not straight forward because it depends on a number of factors. How long are you planning on staying in your home? If the answer is 5 years or less we recommend a 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio - more on that in a later post) unit. If you're going to be in the house longer we would recommend a 16 SEER unit that will save thousands of dollars over the years. The bigger the system, the more you'll save.
